Dr. Ojum Ogwo Hails Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu’s Lasting Legacy on Healthcare In Abia State

Dr. Ojum Ogwo, personal physician to former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has described Kalu’s contributions to healthcare in the state as a “legacy of iconic proportion” that reshaped access to medical services for millions.

In a heartfelt reflection shared publicly, Dr. Ogwo recounted his experience working closely with Kalu during his eight-year tenure as governor (1999–2007), emphasizing how the administration’s Free Healthcare Scheme revolutionized health delivery in Abia. According to Ogwo, the initiative dubbed the “Abia Health Pattern” broke barriers by reaching every corner of the state and eliminating the divide between the wealthy and the underprivileged.

“For the first time, quality healthcare became a fundamental right in Abia State, not a privilege for the few,” Ogwo wrote. “Governor Kalu’s visionary leadership ensured that no citizen, regardless of their social or economic status, was left behind.”

A Model for Inclusive Healthcare

Dr. Ogwo credited Kalu’s policies for building lasting healthcare infrastructure, investing in medical personnel, and delivering free medical services to residents without discrimination. This, he said, set a benchmark for other states across Nigeria, turning Abia into a model for accessible healthcare delivery.

He added that many of the young doctors who worked under the scheme then fresh graduates are now senior consultants and medical specialists across various fields. Some, now retired, remain eager to continue supporting Kalu’s healthcare initiatives through telemedicine, a modern approach allowing patients to consult doctors virtually and receive prescriptions remotely.

“By integrating telemedicine into his outreach programs, Senator Kalu can expand free healthcare services to more people across Abia North and beyond,” Ogwo suggested, proposing a system where patients could connect with doctors via a central platform and receive timely care.

A Lasting Impact Beyond Politics

Dr. Ogwo praised Kalu’s leadership as one that went beyond politics, leaving behind a healthcare legacy that continues to benefit citizens years after his tenure. He described Kalu as a “champion of human rights in healthcare” whose policies remain a benchmark for future leaders.

Concluding his remarks, Ogwo offered prayers for the senator, asking for divine wisdom and strength as he continues to serve both Abia State and Nigeria through his legislative duties.

“May God continue to bless you with the wisdom to bring policies that drive meaningful change for Abia and the nation at large,” Ogwo said.
